Efforts to stop coprescribing of opioids, benzodiazepines helped, but problem ongoing

Oral medications for COVID-19 underused among socially vulnerable, CDC study finds
By late May, the rate of prescriptions for molnupiravir and nirmatrelvir/ritonavir was twice as high in the highest-income U.S. ZIP codes as in the lowest, research showed. A CDC webinar on June 28 will discuss efforts to equitably distribute these treatments.

USPSTF recommends screening for unhealthy drug use in adults

Overdose deaths from synthetic opioids increase while overall opioid deaths decline
From 2017 to 2018, overdose deaths related to prescription opioids and heroin decreased by 14% and 4%, respectively, and overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids increased by 10%.

Withholding, delaying antibiotics for simple respiratory infections had similar outcomes as immediate prescriptions
Not prescribing antibiotics or delaying prescriptions for uncomplicated acute sore throats and other respiratory infections resulted in fewer than 40% of patients using antibiotics and similar symptomatic outcomes versus offering immediate prescriptions, a study found.
