Internal Medicine Meeting 2016 goes to Washington

This issue covers topics such as the proper way to do a neurological workup, recently approved forms of insulin, and how to address nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Internal Medicine Meeting 2016 was held this spring from May 5-7 in Washington, D.C., and hosted over 10,000 attendees. As always, our staff was on the scene to provide daily updates, available online , as well as coverage for this issue, which focuses on the meeting.

One story this month is on neurology , which presenter Martin A. Samuels, MD, MACP, said has become more of a mystery to general internists due to changes in training. His talk tried to remedy that situation by providing a detailed review of the ideal workup for patients with neurological symptoms, including the touchstones of psychiatric mental status, neurological mental status, cranial nerve status, a motor exam, a sensory exam, coordination and gait, and reflexes.

Another story addresses the new types of insulin that have been approved by the FDA in the past year or so, ranging from higher concentrations to generic versions to a completely new molecule. These new products offer clinicians and patients more choices but can also create confusion, as presenter Lillian Lien, MD, ACP Member, explains.

Read about diagnosing and detecting syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections, such as herpes simplex virus, urethritis, and cervicitis, in primary care. Another story offers insights on treating nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, the most common chronic liver disease in the U.S., while another story will teach you how to become a better volunteer. Learn how a patient's “story” can add crucial information to the puzzle of allergy and asthma diagnoses, while an expert offers 4 steps for managing osteoarthritis pain in the elderly. Finally, stories look at lowering lipid levels and managing sinusitis and community-acquired pneumonia.

In closing, I'm proud to announce that we have won 2 Silver Awards in the American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors' (ASHPE) annual competition in the categories of Best Newsletter overall for ACP Internist and Best E-Newsletter for ACP Internist Weekly. ACP Internist also received an EXCEL Award for Editorial Excellence in Newspapers from Association Media & Publishing, while our e-newsletter ACP Diabetes Monthly was recognized for Editorial Excellence in Digital Newsletters. Our staff is thrilled that our coverage has been honored as among the best in health care and association publishing, and we look forward to improving even more in the year ahead. Please let us know what you'd like to see from us.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Kearney-Strouse
