John H. Stone, III, MACP

John H. Stone, III, MACP, professor of medicine (cardiology) emeritus and associate dean for admissions emeritus at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta died on Nov. 5, 2008. A beloved teacher, mentor, cardiologist, poet, and essayist, Dr. Stone focused his entire career on the heart, both as a physician and an author.

The grandson of a general practitioner, Dr. Stone was born Feb. 7, 1936, in Jackson, Miss. He received his BA from Millsaps College in Jackson in 1958 and his MD from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1962. He completed his residency in medicine and cardiology at the University of Rochester in New York and a fellowship in cardiology at Emory, where he took a position with the medical school faculty in 1969. Dr. Stone became a Master of the College in April 2003.

Mark E. Silverman, MACP

Mark E. Silverman, MACP, a cardiologist and passionate educator, died on Nov. 12, 2008, at the age of 69. The founding cardiologist of the Fuqua Heart Center at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Dr. Silverman served as a mentor for many students, residents and fellows during his 38 years on the faculty of Emory University.

Dr. Silverman was born in Springfield, Ohio and attended Ohio State University. He graduated from the University of Chicago School of Medicine in 1963 and completed residency at Ohio State. After serving as a cardiologist in the Air Force for two years, Dr. Silverman became the director of newly established coronary care unit at Piedmont Hospital. He was also a prolific writer, especially of medical history, including a book “British Cardiology in the Twentieth Century.”

Dr. Silverman became a Master of the College in 2000 and served as ACP Governor for Georgia from 1995-1999.

Robert E. Tyson, FACP

We recently learned of the death of Robert E. Tyson, MD, FACP, on June 27, 2008, at the age of 81. Dr. Tyson became a Fellow of the College in 1973. He served as Governor for the Mississippi Chapter from 1981-1985.
