College to release the final section of its MKSAP 12 text; CD-ROM coming soon
By Phyllis Maguire
The College will release the last section of its Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP) 12 later this month and is preparing to release a CD-ROM version of the product in May.
MKSAP 12, the College’s latest version of its popular self-assessment tool, explores 13 internal medicine subspecialties. MKSAP 12 gives internists a separate booklet for each subspecialty topic and is divided into three parts.
Part A, which shipped last September, covers gastroenterology and hepatology, endocrinolgy and metabolism, infectious disease medicine and rheumatology.
Part B, which became available in January, covers oncology, hematology, cardiovascular medicine, pulmonary medicine and neurology.
Part C, which will be available April 25, covers dermatology, nephrology, hospital-based medicine/critical care and ambulatory medicine. Together, all three parts provide 135 hours of category 1 CME credit.
More than 20,000 internists have already ordered MKSAP 12. The last component of the product will be shipped in time to help internists who plan to sit for the August 2001 certification or the November 2001 recertification exam.
“MKSAP 12 is a quantum leap forward in terms of making the material more accessible and letting it function as a multipurpose resource,” said Sean McKinney, Director of the College’s Self Assessment Programs. “MKSAP is not just a Board preparation package—it’s also a practice improvement tool and a clinical reference.”
Clinical questions posed at the beginning of each section help focus the material, while references placed next to the text enhance evidence-based education. Hypothetical cases also help users apply answers to clinical questions to real patient encounters. MKSAP 12 contains more than 1,200 multiple-choice questions, each one with answers and detailed critiques explaining those answers.
MKSAP 12 also offers several other new features. The new MKSAP Prep for Boards course, for example, gives internists going through certification and recertification questions and test-taking strategies. An image module includes 150 images with separate histories, while a question module contains 500 multiple-choice questions with answers and critiques. MKSAP Prep for Boards, which has been available since September, is also available on CD-ROM.
In late May, the College will release MKSAP 12 CD-ROM. This electronic version will contain all three parts of MKSAP with features such as quick searching, point-and-click test taking, automatic test scoring and audio-video presentations. Hundreds of hyperlinks will provide instant cross-referencing.
For the first time, an audio companion is available for the entire MKSAP program. MKSAP 12 Audio Companion, which reinforces and expands on new points raised in the program, is for internists who like to study while exercising, commuting or traveling.
Two audio tapes (or audio CDs) per month have been released since last October. A collection of 72 tapes or CDs will be complete by October of 2003. The price per installment will range from $349 for College members who have bought MKSAP print or electronic versions to $499 for nonmembers who have not bought MKSAP 12. Physicians who order all three installments at once will receive a 15% discount.
In late 2002, the College will release another new feature, MKSAP 12 Update. This product will update MKSAP 12 with information on medical advances and cutting-edge developments.
Internists who have purchased MKSAP 12 CD-ROM will be able to download the new material to their computer via CD-ROM and automatically update their original MKSAP material. (The Update feature will mark all changes with update icons.) Users of the MKSAP 12 print version will be able to purchase an Update CD-ROM with updated material.
Both the print and CD-ROM version of MKSAP 12 cost $329 for College members, $219 for Associates and $429 for nonmembers. A special combination package price including both versions is $558 for members, $338 for Associates and $758 for nonmembers. MKSAP Prep for Boards and MKSAP 12 Update cost $99 each.
