I am excited to let you know about a wonderful new opportunity to invest in the future of the College and internal medicine: the ACP-ASIM Foundation. With a dynamic board of directors, a full complement of officers and an Executive Vice President in place, the ACP-ASIM Foundation is up and running—and looking for financial support.

The Foundation's mission is to "enhance and promote the health of the public through the financial support of programs in education and research." To date, we have approved funding of several projects, including an effort to help mid-career physicians become board certified and a project with the American Board of Internal Medicine that focuses on professionalism in internal medicine.

The Foundation can fund new research and educational projects, however, only by creating and securing financial assets. Although we plan to seek grants from industry and other foundations for some of our projects, the Foundation's success in meeting its ambitious goals will depend primarily on support from members like you. That's why as chair of the Development Committee, which is charged with raising financial support for our activities, I am encouraging members to get involved and make a financial gift.

There are a number of ways that you can contribute to the Foundation without making a major financial sacrifice. By giving the Foundation a gift of appreciated stock or property, for example, you receive a tax deduction and eliminate capital gains tax. Supporting the Foundation through a bequest will reduce estate taxes.

The Foundation will soon have a staff member on hand who can offer advice or refer members to qualified estate planning and financial experts. Of course, it is essential that all donors consult their own personal attorneys and tax advisors before making a planned gift or bequest.

If you are interested in discussing a present or future gift, please call Jean Krause, the Foundation's Executive Vice President, at 877-208-4189. You will be hearing more about the Foundation and our major gifts programs in the future.

Dr. Reynolds was President of the College from 1997-98.
